The Summer Season has started at LD Mountain Centre with the arrival of our new summer ranges and an exciting shop change around. After a long and fantastically snowy winter, with some of the best skiing, snowboarding and winter climbing in the UK for a lot of years, we seem to be moving straight into the summer season without that period when the weather doesn’t seem to know which season it is.

New summer lines from our major brands Berghaus, The North Face, Haglofs, Mountain Equipment and Arc’teryx focus on lightweight fabrics whether it’s something waterproof, windproof, lightweight or a wicking base layer these manufacturers have got it all. GoreTex® Paclite is recognised as one of the very best lightweight waterproof and breathable fabrics and features in the Berghaus Paldor Peak, Paclite and Paclite Trek Jackets, the Haglofs LIM Ultimate Jacket, the North Face Nimbus and Circadian Jackets and the Arc’teryx Alpha SL Jacket. Other lightweight waterproof and breathable fabrics like Hyvent DT from North Face and Aquafoil Light from Berghaus provide great performance at a competitive price.

As well as our major brands, new season lines from favourite summer names like Craghopper and Royal Robbins are now in store with a great selection of lightweight walking, trekking and travel clothing. Our excellent range of walking boots and shoes from Scarpa, Meindl, Kayland and Brasher now has a supporting cast of summer shoes and sandals from Teva, Merrell, Keen, North Face and Salomon.

As part of our exciting shop change around this season the ground floor will remain the focus of our outdoor and travel clothing and also travel accessories from Lifesystems, Lifeventure, Vango, Platypus and Camelbak however the first floor at LD Mountain Centre is having a make over as our new camping and climbing department. A wide selection of tents from super lightweight solo tents to family tents is available from famous names like, MSR, Vango, North Face and Mountain Equipment, many are erected and on display and if not we are always happy to put one up for you in store. We love this time of year as this is when all of the new season winter outdoor, ski and snowboard stock starts coming through the door and we can begin to change the shop around ready for the winter. This is when we get to see what is new for the coming winter season, the new colours and styles for outdoor jackets and pants, ski clothing and snowboard outerwear, new technology in snowboard boots, snowboards, skis, ski boots, winter climbing hardware, new rucksack designs or extra warm down jackets. This is what our staff are passionate about and is what gets them fired up for going out there on the hills, in the mountains and on the rock.

Ski and Snowboard Testing

With so many ski brands on the market and so many ski models available in each brand, testing is essential in order to make the right selection of which skis to take in the new seasons range. For several years now our managing director Pete Davison has been an integral part of the ski test team for Ski and Board Magazine (Hyperlink), at the Ski Industry of Great Britain (SIGB) test week. This year the ski test for 09 /10 skis took place in Bormio , Italy back in March. Pete was massively impressed with skis from the Scott, K2 , Atomic, Line, Volkl and Salomon ranges and this has helped shape the choices made for our 2010 ski range. At the LD Mountain Centre we've taken something for everyone with skis to ride on-piste, all mountain, big mountain and park and pipe. Check out what Pete and the other ski testers thought in the October edition of Ski and Board Magazine. The LD Mountain Centre 2010 Ski Range includes Skis, Ski Luggage, Ski Clothing and Ski Equipment.

For the last few years select LD Mountain Centre staff have accompanied Pete on the ski test. This year Mike, Andy and John had the tough job of going along to Bormio to put the top ski brands through their paces. This is a massive advantage for an independent ski store as it means the guys selling you your new skis have actually ridden them and know how each ski performs. Favourites obviously emerged, Mike loved the Scott Crusade, again (he bought some last year!), the Atomic Black Eye, part of Atomic's Nomad all mountain range and Salomon's 24Hour piste machine, Andy was blown away by the Volkl Gotoma skis but also thought the Atomic Smoke was a brilliant value for money all mountain ski and John loved the Line Prophet 100, so versatile for a wide ski and the Salomon X-Wing 8 skis are such a great value for money all condition ski.

Neil and Jonny took the opportunity last winter to borrow and test demo snowboards from Lib Tech snowboards, K2 snowboards, DC snowboards, Burton Snowboards, Ride snowboards and Salomon snowboards, and between them gave the snowboards a workout in Canada and Europe . This year Neil is off back to Banff in Canada with some snowboards to test and Jonny is off heli-boarding in Revelstoke , British Columbia . Watch this space for reports. Dave's back at LDMC this winter with plans to ride in Austria and Jasna in Slovakia . He'll be riding a K2 Darkstar snowboard with Ride Beta snowboard bindings, but again hopes to demo some new toys.

North Face Shop in Shop

New this Autumn!!

LD Mountain Centre, in collaboration with The North Face, have created a dedicated shop in shop area for The North Face products. Although already one of our major brands this development will allow us to stock a broader range of The North Face styles and colours in our Newcastle based shop. Old favourites are still there such as the Nuptse Vest and Nuptse Jacket for men and women, the Triclimate range of outdoor jackets and the Apex Bionic softshell range of jackets and vests. Also back in this year is The North Face Metropolis Parka.

New Season The North Face outdoor, ski and snowboard wear has arrived with lots of new lines and colours for both men and women. In the ski and snowboard wear range, we have men's and women's Decagon ski and snowboard jackets, men's Sabre and Stavros ski and snowboard jackets and women's Amore and La Fonda ski and snowboard jackets plus many more and a huge range of mid layer fleece including the beautifully soft Mossbud and Black Orchid jackets and hoodies. The new top end outdoor waterproof jacket for women, the Point Five Gore-Tex looks amazing with loads of technical features. Why not take a look at it…? The North Face Point Five Gore-Tex Waterproof Jacket.

Outdoor Department

Throughout the summer and last winter, our test team undertook the valuable task of testing clothing from Berghaus, Haglofs and Mountain Equipment, tents from Vango and MSR and rucksacks from Berghaus and Deuter in the Lake District, Scotland and further a field, giving them first hand experience with the products now in our range.

Richie :
Richie and Caroline spent two weeks in late August and early September sport climbing at Ceuse near Gap in the South of France. They used Tendon Ambition ropes in particular the 10mm x 50m single rope and 7.9mm x 50m Half Rope, Scarpa Stix and Scarpa Force rock climbing shoes and Wildcountry Wildwire quickdraws.

They also took Jet Boil Stove which they were very impressed with which was super efficient and a Vango Nitro 200 tent.

Ben:
Ben went bouldering in South Africa earlier in the year to Rocklands near Clanwilliam he travelled with a TNF Base Camp Duffle and used a Berghaus Roam 30 rucksack as his day sack. Ben is going to France sport climbing in October and hopes to get some hard routes done at Saussois, Surgy and Salutre in Burgundy . Ben uses a range of Sportiva rock climbing shoes and Beal ropes.

John:
Following last summer's trip to the Gran Paradiso and Monte Rosa group in the Italian Alps, John was back in Italy again in August, this time in the Dolomites. Classic Via Ferrata and traditional multi-pitch rock climbing routes were the name of the game. John used the Black Diamond Iron Cruiser via ferrata kit which he found super light and really easy for clipping the wires. The bungee design on the lanyards kept them from getting in the way. He also climbed with a Berghaus Roam 30 day sack, not really a climbing rucksack but incredibly versatile and comfortable even on multi-pitch rock climbs as were his new Scarpa Thunder rock shoes.

Mark:
Mark is off to an up and coming rock climbing and bouldering area in Turkey in November. The Antalya Peninsula looks amazing. Mark will be using a Tendon Master 9.2 rope, Camp Orbit quickdraws and Scarpa Stix & Scarpa Booster rock climbing shoes on the trip.
